Film vs Digital…….
That phrase is bullshit, let me just get that out of the way. Way too many photographers are busy pixel peeping and analyzing the least important details of photo gear instead of making art and just getting out there and shooting beautiful images on whatever camera they can get their hands on. I switched to digital in 2004 and packed up my old Canon FD gear thinking I would never touch it again. I jumped headlong into digital photography and didn't look back. Digital photography just had sooooo many advantages that I couldn't imagine going back to film!
By 2009 I started to get a nagging feeling that I was missing something……..not sure what it was but I pulled out my old Canon A1 and loaded up some Fuji Seperia 200 film from my local drug store and started shooting. It was fun to use old gear and the photos looked better than I expected which peaked my curiosity even more and I stared to really wonder about what film had to offer me both technically and creatively. I couldn't quite put my finger on what it was but I think I was attracted to the limitations and discipline of shooting more deliberately. I started to look on E-Bay and realized that I could pick up some top level 35mm film bodies for a fraction of what they are really worth!!!!! I had some Canon EF mount lenses and several speedlites for my digital bodies so I decided to pick up an EOS 5 for $40 and load up some more Fuji Superia 200 and shoot my sons birthday party with my EF 28mm f/1.8 and a 580 EXII. I took the film in to have it processed and scanned and I was blown away with how great the images looked!! Somehow shooting digital had made me forget how capable film was, how could this be? That one roll of film hooked my in and I knew I needed to explore analogue photography some more, but what to try next?
